Artist Statement
My work is a constantly evolving journey for me. I started more representational and have gradually gone through a continuum of painting styles. I am steadily training, experimenting and continuing to refine my work. However, most of my paintings tend to take on a life of their own. I feel alive and connected when I paint, and I can express feelings that my words just can’t explain.
“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” Vincent Van Gogh
I find inspiration to paint all around me. Growing up living on the water near bays, creeks and marshes gave me a love and appreciation for painting scenes with water. I love the ripples, the reflections, the bouncing light, and the surrounding trees.
Trees are also near and dear to my heart. We lost most all our trees in 2018 when Hurricane Michael destroyed our town. This loss has affected me more than I could ever imagine. I find myself painting with imaginary visions of trees surrounded by water or water surrounded by trees. I think this helps me recover from the loss we suffered, and to truly appreciate nature and our environment.
It has been said,
“Artists can find inspiration in things others pass by a thousand times.”
I have learned it is just best to focus on the journey and the process of each painting and not the destination or the final outcome. In this way, I am honoring my creative spirit, my sense of curiosity and my need to explore and discover. I have learned to let go of my need to control, to be in charge. I can take risks, be vulnerable, mess up, cover up or paint over what’s not working. I strive to make paintings that are striking from a distance and rich with details and texture when viewed up close.
I like to work in two different and distinct ways. When I paint representationally, I use my oil paints, and work all in one setting, called alla prima painting. It is applying wet paint over wet paint. The oils are buttery and rich and so much fun to move around. Sometimes I add Cold Wax to my oils, and then I enjoy working in layers. I usually have a plan or a reference for what I will be painting, like a landscape, a figure, or a photograph I’ve taken.
I painting abstractly when I want to express feelings that I just cannot describe with words. These may be feelings of joy from long-ago memories, or from special moments while traveling, being out in nature, watching the wind blow the waves, or from the joy of spending time with family and friends. Some feelings may be sad feelings that I’ve tried to hide after we lost our home, our town, and most all out trees when we were crushed by the massive hurricane.
I do not pre-plan my abstract paintings. I will admit, it took me a while for me to just let go, to forge ahead, and trust the process of painting without a plan or reference. I find my way as I paint, I let the painting actually guide me. I will step back and take notice quite often and ask what do I like so far, what do I need, what don’t I have? When I become aware of these answers, I will respond and continue the painting. There will be many shifts, changes, and layers. I may write something, like a verse, or a saying,or something not legible. Some parts will be covered up, others will barely be peeping through, which creates a sense of wonder.
The energy, color, movement and lines in the piece all speak to me. Unexpected results delight me. A connection is being made . Synchronicity is felt. I hope my viewers feel it as well.
I am hoping you find moments of calmness and some energy, a familiarity you can relate to, as well as joy and appreciation from my work. And eventually, I hope you make a connection with my art. Original art can be a timeless, special and meaningful piece to add to any home. It’s a one-of-a-kind treasure. Art has a way of transforming a house into a home, or a business into a warm friendly place. Art has the ability to express our emotions and feelings in a way that words simply can’t.
Like Edward Hopper says, “If you can say it in words, there would be no reason to paint.”
I am honored and delighted to be abla to create something that others would love to have, to keep them company, to brighten up a special space, and to share with their guests.
I would love to work with anyone who has an interest in my work, to add a piece to their collection, or to give as a gift to someone special.
Someone once told me as I was looking to purchase some art for our home,
“Trust your gut, if you love it, don’t hesitate to buy it.”
Well, I was reluctant to make that purchase at that time. But, I could not get it off my mind and I finally decided to buy it, however, it had sold! 😔 That taught me a valuable lesion! Buy it because you love it.
My ultimate wish for each of my paintings, is that the right person - for whom it was meant - will find it and love it at first sight.
